The National Archives in Washington have put together a model website for showing off their treasures. You can see the documents for the Louisiana Purchase, the D-Day landings in Normandy, and the Treaty of Alliance of 1778. A great place to start learning about archival documents.

Treaty of Alliance with France

2/6/1778

This treaty formalized France’s financial and military support of the revolutionary government in America. As part of the alliance between “the most Christian King and the United of North America,” neither party could conclude a peace “with Great Britain without the formal consent of the other.”

I am no American historian, but I have to goggle at the chance to inspect Ronald Reagan’s handwritten letter to Gorbachev in 1985 …. The most powerful man in the world wrote like a grade 6 kid!
